Additive Flow exists to solve digital workflow issues that currently prevent users — and potential users — of additive from unlocking the potential of manufacturing technologies during the pre-production stages of the process chain. The company’s multi-functional approach has resulted in the development of holistic, digital tools that simultaneously consider material properties, geometry and material placement, hardware systems, and build parameters to increase multi-property performance and optimise the outcomes for any AM application, regardless of discrete material types (metal/polymer/ceramic) and combinations for multi-material applications, within the boundaries of material science where defined materials and material properties can be combined through the manufacturing process and depending on it.

The proprietary, unique and modular FormFlow software is a truly advanced solution suite that overcomes many of the common challenges that designers and engineers encounter as they work with high-performing materials and AM hardware, and struggle to unlock the complexity capabilities through their digital interface. FormFlow meets these issues head on and unlocks the latent power of additive manufacturing processes.

Windows Desktop Application

FormFlow provides designers and engineers with real solutions to common, previously unaddressed challenges experienced within the Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) workflow and pre-production preparation. Offering considerable time and cost efficiencies to the process chain, FormFlow optimises designs for AM in a number of unique ways — quickly and efficiently — that are not possible with traditional “optimisation” and/or “simulation” software. This is because FormFlow enables specific physics-driven comparisons of the design, material, AM process and production output against key performance indicators (KPIs) as defined by our clients, according to their application priorities.

FormFlow goes well beyond the capabilities of discrete generative design, topology optimisation and design simulation software tools and offers intelligent multi-functionality that addresses the simultaneous material, properties, and process parameter optimisation of part geometry within user-defined constraints.

Anisotropic Optimisation
Additive manufacturing processes predominantly feature Ansiotropic along the build axis, where the 3D printed part behaves differently depending on the direction of force applied to an object. This usually means that 3D printed parts behave differently to forces applied perpendicular to the build direction. If these are ignored, and instead the prevailing isotropic solvers on the market are used, optimization results will invariably be wrong, and key safety factors may be missed and/or true optimisation opportunities lost. This anisotropy plays an even greater role within composite structures, where fibre orientation delivers enhanced engineering properties in particular directions. The solvers within FormFlow ensure that the opportunities for anisotropic optimisation can be realised for every application.
Multi-Property Allocation & Optimisation
Additive manufacturing presents the opportunity to adjust parameters throughout the printing process, or to apply different parameters to different regions of a part. This has the potential to unlock productivity, cost and performance improvements when compared with traditional manufacturing processes. However, the complexity of manually deciding which regions should have which property sets can be time-consuming and complex. This is where the multi- property optimisation algorithms in FormFlow come into their own. Built on a robust foundation of multi-material leadership within Additive Flow, the software has the capabilities to address different parameter sets within an optimisation while enabling skilled engineers to apply their parameter knowledge seamlessly across a split mesh. Additive Flow is able to work with clients to demonstrate and compare the differences between solid topology, manual homogenous properties, and adaptive properties. For example….
Workflow Friendly
Important to state that as an organisation we play nice with others. To this end file format exports can easily be produced for deployment across our customers’ existing digital tool chains. For example, simulation-ready meshes can be generated quickly and efficiently with highly performing results in order to be validated by leading simulation experts, if required for the project, and can include split mesh production files for ready deployment of multi property print parameters by the build-processor software on any given AM platform type.
Plug-in for Rhino 3D & Grasshopper

The FireFlow software tool from Additive Flow, unlike the comprehensive standalone FormFlow suite, is a dedicated plugin for grasshopper / Rhino CAD that enables multi-material, multi-property functionality for component design and production using additive manufacturing processes. The ability to simultaneously optimise materials and geometry within the design environment is a key advantage of FireFlow that enables a much greater exploration of optimised design options for AM in a fraction of the time that traditional, less functional optimisation tools take.
